Properties and production of thermally modified wood:
In the thermal modification process, wood is heated to temperatures between 180 and 230° Celsius in the absence of oxygen. This significantly reduces the wood's ability to absorb water, thus depriving wood-degrading fungi and bacteria of their food source. This increases the durability of the wood. All wooden parts of the barrel sauna (except for feet, window and door frames, gables, and outdoor decking boards) are supplied in Nordic thermally modified wood.

Thermal modification gives the wood a uniform, brown color, which, like all other woods, grays under UV radiation. We therefore recommend treating the wood with a wood preservative stain nonetheless.
